The songbook is a fun journey through time, with songs like “Mountain Dew” and “One Tin Soldier” which have been in the songbook since the dawn of time, to the era of James Taylor, Johnny Cash, John Prine, and John Denver, to the most recent additions from the likes of The Allman Brothers and Tom Petty.
Parents sometimes ask, “do the boys actually sing?” And the answer is a definite yes. At camp, when the counselors sing, the boys want to sing, and all worries about “do I look cool?” or “how do I sound?” just disappear. During the summer, you will find singing in our assemblies, at campfire, and even sometimes in the dining hall - with the last always impromptu depending on the boys’ moods!
Singing sometimes leads to boys learning to play a chord on a counselor’s guitar and we’ve had several assembly counselor song leaders who first learned to play that way.
So, grab a songbook, use Spotify to get the tune, and sing along!
