As we continue preparing for the launch of our 2nd Century, we asked the question of what activity additions made sense for camp and we are happy to announce them!
Please note that families of all generations have let us know that they want Mondamin to maintain its emphasis on outdoor skill-building activities with an extensive wilderness tripping program accessible to all ages. We quite agree! That is not changing one bit. We agree that it is one of the key pillars of our program and what sets us apart from many others.
All of those “major activities” - swimming, canoeing & kayaking, sailing, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, backpacking, the Nature Lab, and tennis - will carry on as you know them. Similarly, we are not dropping any of our other activities - boat shop & woodworking, crafts, archery, riflery, zipline, and occasional ball sports in our gym or on our ballfield.
FISHING: We’ve long had the occasional afternoon on the lake with some old-school bamboo cane poles, but many boys have been asking for a bigger bite of fishing for years! It will now join our list of daily in-camp offerings. We believe that it fits well in our program as a lifelong outdoor skill that teaches patience and a deeper understanding of the natural world. 650-acre Lake Summit is home to several species of fish such as bluegill, sunfish, catfish and a few different bass.
Boys can learn the skill of cast fishing as well as the technique of throwing a cast net. Skills such as knot tying, choosing bait, and learning where to try your luck go along with it!
Pickleball: We already have a tennis program, so why not add in pickleball! Our courts have room for both and the two sports go hand in hand. For many kids, pickleball makes for a great “entry ramp” to tennis and other racket sports and it’s just great fun on its own.
Gaga Ball: Bombardment (our version of dodgeball) is already an In-Camp-Activity favorite. If your kids’ school or park doesn’t have one, gaga ball is a “knees and down” version of dodgeball played in an octagonal pit.
Disc Golf: Like gaga ball, disc golf will be a brand new In-Camp-Activity offering in 2024. Disc golf is super fun and challenging, but it’s easy to learn and can be played in small or large groups. We will be installing a 9-hole course ranging to all different spots around camp!
